SUSPENSION OF DEPORTATION DECLARED TODAY, DEPORTATION TO AFGHANISTAN CARRIED OUT YESTERDAY - WILL FINLAND RETRIEVE THIS 19-YEAR-OLD BOY?

Today, the Administrative Court of Turku announced a ban against enforced deportation of 19-year-old Zaki, who  was deported by force yesterday. Operations of Finnish officials have endangered the life of this young man.

On Sunday, the chairwoman of the city council of Loimaa Tarja Mäki-Punto-Ristanen, chief executive officer Pauli Salminen, and member of the parliament Olavi Ala-Nissilä demanded the Administrative Court of Turku to abort the detention and deportation of Zaki. The request was based on a mistake in the negative decision, issued by the Finnish Immigration Service. Zaki’s lawyer had applied for suspension of the deportation to Administrative Court, but the decision came too late. 19-year-old Zaki is already in Kabul without a safety network.
Furthermore, the ways of operating by police raise concern. Zaki had applied for a residence permit based on employment, and had been granted permission to reside in the country during the process of his application.

Why are asylum seekers taken into detention, hastily on a Sunday? And why are the detained prevented from staying in contact with lawyers and supporters? Why are people picked up in a great rush from reception centers by police, accompanied by dogs, as happened to a young family in Heinola?

The unannounced and hurried operation of the police reveals an uncontrolled deportation process instead of interpretation of law that respects basic human rights.

A petition, signed by citizens and specialists, has since long demanded an independent investigation into decisions made by Finnish Immigration Services. The demand to stop deportations meanwhile, has been put forward in order to prevent deportation of people to situations where they face oppression and death. Supporters of Zaki demand a new processing of Zaki’s asylum case in the Finnish Immigration Service.

Eva Biaudet, Chairperson of The Finnish Parliament Network For Human Rights, demands Finnish Officials to take responsibility and to take action in saving Zaki - it is against international agreements to conduct forced deportation while an application suspending deportation is in process.

Hanna Helinko, from The Finnish Immigration Service, promised that Migri will account for the matter. However, she points out that verification of the issued warrant of deportation is the responsibility of the police.

Who takes responsibility of returning Zaki safely to Finland? The Finnish Immigration Service, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the police or the government of Finland? In the end, someone must take this responsibility.
