[PRESS RELEASE] ZAKI, DEPORTED BECAUSE OF MISTAKES BY THE POLICE, RETURNED TO FINLAND

Zaki, a young man deported to Afghanistan because of mistakes by the immigration police, returned to Finland today. A large number of activists from Loimaa and from Stop Deportations assisted him in his return.

A deeply moved group of people from Loimaa met Zaki yesterday at Helsinki-Vantaa airport.
Raisio Immigration Police deported Zaki on 3 July 2017 even though an application for prohibition of enforcement had been submitted at Turku Administrative Court.

Zaki had also been promised that he could wait in Finland while his work permit application was being processed. However, the police did not ask the court about the decision before deporting Zaki and sending the young man to Kabul. In Kabul Zaki found out that the court had prohibited his deportation. Hasty decisions by the immigration police thus caused massive costs to Zaki’s Finnish family and friends and unnecessary hassle for authorities and helpers.

Zaki now returns to his family and has a work permit allowing him to continue working. Justice has been done.

Even though Zaki’s case ended well, it demonstrates how cruel deportations can be. The work to stop deportations continues.
